Jan 2012 In-car GPS navigation systems are more now more popular than they have ever been. Rather than having to use a map, as once was, GPS allows the driver to find their way with much greater ease. Global positioning technology in cars uses satellites to identify exactly where you are the planet. Numerous manufacturers now offer these products, and they have become ubiquitous in a large majority of cars in the developed world. GPS navigation software has become significantly more advanced and more accurate as time has progressed.
There are numerous things that need to be considered when choosing which unit to purchase. Firstly, how often you are going to be using the unit? If, for example, you are going to be using it on a twice annual basis there is no point paying a large amount of money on something that you will not be getting a huge amount of use out of. Depending on space availability you may go for a handheld device or a larger built-in unit. The advantage of the larger units is of they have a CD unit in the back of the car enabling you to store several much larger maps in much larger detail. GPS navigation software stored on these CDs are less popular now but are very efficient.
Nearly all GPS systems now include voice directions. This is particularly advantageous as driving and looking down at the screen is not conducive to safe driving. GPS navigation software will usually give you the option of several voices, and in several languages. You can choose which one you want, which accent you want it in, and you can also download your own versions, for example famous characters.
Aside from just getting you from A to B, GPS navigation software usually will include several points of interest. These could be anything from restaurants, petrol stations and airports etc. The software also enables you to include your own points of interest by creating them yourself or downloading from the Internet. Most of the more popular consumer units come with software preloaded on the memory card. This enables use straight from the box, switch on and you’re ready to go. They also include a car charger, some will include mains adapter in the box, but often these need to be bought as an extra accessory.
All in all the software contained in these units is very advanced, something to consider when looking for one is whether or not you want it purely for your country of residence or with additional countries included should you be taking the unit with you on holiday and wish to use it on a worldwide basis. Even if you initially buy one for your home country, you will be able to buy additional maps in future should you wish to add them. This is a simple process of purchasing the maps online and installing via the supplied USB cable to your unit. Disadvantages are if you buy maps for a large country they may require a memory card to a greater capacity and maps bought separately are generally more expensive than those included in the GPS unit at the time of the original purchase.
